Really Free Software !!

You can't search google for "Free Software" any more because 118,000,000 results come up and most of them are scams where the word "Free" instantly dissapears when you visit the site, or they include spyware, viruses, or some other crap.

I decided to list a few sites that I routinely use that offer software that is really free and doesn't come with a hidden "Price".

First Windows "Real Free" Software (in no particular order):

Smart FTP - No Longer Freeware !!!

Well, this is bad news for me since I've been using Smart FTP for years but according to the splash screen on the latest version it is no longer freeware for personal use.

Here's the splash screen :

I'm not sure why this is exactly I guess they are hurting for money like everyone else is these days but I still say that I'm sorry to see them go.

Now I am using a different program (still freeware) for all my FTP and SFTP needs, it's called WinSCP and you can get it from here http://winscp.net/  I'll do a review of it once I've used it for a while.

Until then feel free to try it and let me know what you think.

SMP Problems with Vmware Server

I've recently run into an issue running a Windows XP Guest on Vmware for Linux the latest version (1.0.6 as of this writing) still displayed this problem.  What was happening is that the vmware-vmx process was using 199 - 200% of the available CPU time slowing the server to a crawl even when the guest machine was idle at a desktop.

I have been looking for an explanation for what was causing this problem for quite some time, here's what I have found:

  • This issue may be os Dependant (I.E. it may only happen on a Linux Host)
  • Either 32 or 64 bit hosts can be affected

The cause of this problem (at least in my case) appears to be a bug in the way vmware handles multi-processor guests on multi-processor (or multi core, like the core 2 duo) host systems.

When I edited the virtual machine settings and changed the "Number of Processors" to 1 instead of 2 the problem disappeared instantly and every thing works perfectly now.
