Fantastic little app, hope to make it work under Linux.

Hello,

I've been using this little gem for years now.
At times it was lost due to a disk crash or even an entire system crashing, but I always downloaded it and installed it on the new disk/system.
I've kept journals on all sorts of things with this little application, even on plans/code for websites of mine, and it helped me keep years worth of details on an ongoing roleplay.

But now I'm hoping I can get it to run under Linux, as I'm finally switching all my computers to a few different distro's.
The way I see it there are a few possibilities that I'll be checking out;

- It ends up working "out of the box".
In other words, the Linux distro's in question don't have any issues with running this little app.
I haven't done any thorrough checking but I'm thinking there's enough of a chance for that to happen.

- It'll need Wine or some other little helper.
No big deal, I know my way around such things too.

- It'll need hours and hours of debugging, modifying, adding code, and more just to find out it won't work.
Been there and done that for other software :p
If that's the case, I'll see if I can find or make some other program that can work with the .dia files (and the passwords I got on several of mine).
Maybe it won't work out and my old journals will be gathering dust - I hope not, I love this software but I am so fed up with the crap of my four Windows machines that I'm going completely Penguin.

Whatever happens, I just wanted to say thanks, at last, for this brilliant little gem...

Running on Linux

I haven't tested running it on linux lately, as I had to stop the native linux version due to incompatibilities with a plugin I was using.  However, the last time I tried it the windows version ran quite well on linux using Wine.

Please give it a try and let me know the results !

Hi, First of all, I would

Hi,

First of all, I would like to say thanks for making this great program! It's simple and easy to use!

I was wondering if you could add a feature that allows users to make entries on previous dates. I would like to transfer my old written journal entries into this one.

Keep up the good work!

Hi! I just wanted to say, I really love this ...

It's great; totally private, just what I need. And it keeps more than one diary! You rock, sister! Hey, I'm no programmer, but I wondered if I could suggest some stuff to make the diary more personal? Email me if that's okay ... [Email address removed for privacy] ... and also, yWriter is the only semi-decent writing tool for authors and I was hoping you could help me with an idea i have for the perfect writer's program (or my idea of such), maybe even make it? All credit to you, of course, as I said I know nothing about programming. But I was hoping you'd maybe help me ... anyway, email me please, and we'll talk about it - i really do have some good ideas for the diary, i think you'll like ... well hope to hear from you soon please!

And keep on being awesome! Do you know that while their are other diary freewares out there, your's is the best and free-est? I don't know about everyone else, but I thank you from the depths of my soul, luv! :D

I'm thrilled that you like

I'm thrilled that you like the software!  I will be contacting you privately to get your ideas.

(Also, I have removed your email address from your posting to protect your privacy.)

Thanks,

I have a new MacBook Pro and

I have a new MacBook Pro and have a serious learning curve.  I would like to download your digital diary that has been mentioned in my online Journaling class.  Have not been able to do so and need some help finding the download button.  LoL Please help me,  Thanks very much, Adria

Mac Installation Instructions

First, I'd like to thank you for your interest in my software and for taking the time to ask a question.

Secondly, I'd like to point out that this is the Download page for the Windows version.

You want the mac version which is over here.

Ok, so once you are on the correct page, you should notice a section at the bottom of the description but before the comments where the files are attached to the post.

It looks like this :

You want to click where it says "DigitalDiaryOSX.zip" in blue, this is the download link.

Here's where it gets sketchy... What happens next depends on which web browser or OS you are using and you didn't mention that so I'm going to assume that you are using Safari on the latest version of Mac OS (10.5).

Now the "Downloads" window will appear and you will see a progress bar move across as the file downloads, this may take a few minutes depending on your Internet speed.

When it's finished the file will be saved into your downloads folder (it's inside of your home folder).

To get to this folder, you Click on an empty area of the desktop, Click "Go" on the menu bar at the top of the screen, then select home from the list.  Then double click on the folder titled "Downloads".

If all goes well you should see a DigitalDiaryOSX.zip file sitting there.  It should look like this :

Double click it and the file should extract and a new file will appear next to it. It should look like this now:

The File with the nice blue icon is the Digital Diary Program for OSX.  Just drag the icon and drop it into your applications folder like this :

Now you can drag the .zip file that's left in the downloads folder to the trash (you don't need it anymore) or you can keep it around if you like.

Yay! The program is now installed !

In order to launch the program you just need to double click it's icon inside the Applications Folder.

(Click on the desktop, Click "Go", "Applications" and scroll around until you find it.)

Please let me know what you think about the software or if you have any more questions.

Stuff that would be better

It would be better if you could have some smilies ----> and you could paste into it, because it doen't seem to work. I also think it is a brilliant idea for password protection. I think it would be good if the look and feel was more sleek and modern. Also, it would be good if you could change the skin of the diary. I don't want to sound like I'm saying too much, you don't have to do all of these things. It's just suggestions. It would be goo, also for a speelchecker to be there (if you wanted to use it at the end)  And you could have, like a sort of profile. Just for you. That you could print out. (Again, you don't have to do all these things)

It would be great if you did a few of these things

Martha

Good Ideas

Martha,

There are some very good suggestions here and I will certainly do my best to add some of them in future updates of the program.

Thanks so much for posting !

Screenshot?

I'm sure it's a nice app---but considering it's something people would be looking at every day, you may want to consider including a screenshot. (Unfortunately, many people can't be bothered with downloading, installing, and trying software just to see what it looks like.) Cheers.

I agree

Done.

Love the interface!

Nice, simple, and to the point. Thanks.

And the same for your editor

And the same for your editor program...?

Done

I've added some screen shots of the silver editor as well.
