You can't search google for "Free Software" any more because 118,000,000 results come up and most of them are scams where the word "Free" instantly dissapears when you visit the site, or they include spyware, viruses, or some other crap.

I decided to list a few sites that I routinely use that offer software that is really free and doesn't come with a hidden "Price".

First Windows "Real Free" Software (in no particular order):

1. Freeware Home - Lots and Lots of Free Software for Windows (Many of my own apps are listed here)
2. Freeware Garden - A developer site that only has two apps listed but they are both very high quality.
3. Versiontracker - Versiontracker is a commercial site that has tons of software for multiple platforms, much of it is freeware but you will have to sort through the Commercial, Update, and Shareware Apps to get to it.
4. Silverwolf's Auditorium - a.k.a. the site you are viewing now.  I have several apps listed for multiple platforms and all of them are free apps.

Now Macintosh "Real Free" Software (in no particular order):

1. Versiontracker - Versiontracker is a commercial site that has software for multiple platforms, much of it is freeware but you will have to sort through the Commercial, Update, and Shareware Apps to get to it.
